Medical Genetics

This is a pass/fail course. You will learn about diseases with a hereditary background and basic principles of genetics, genetic risk, and genetic counselling.

The location varies between Collegium Anatomicum and Przybyszewskiego Hospital.

Most students use the lecture slides provided by the professors. Otherwise, the syllabus recommends some textbooks.

Lectures

  • Take place in Collegium Anatomicum or Przybyszewskiego Hospital. Various instructors will teach material from congenital abnormalities to genetic risk calculation.

Labs

  • Take place in Collegium Anatomicum. These are not wet labs. There will be practicals on pedigree analysis, family counselling, genetic risk, etc.

Internal Tests

  • There is one final exam, which consists of 80 multiple choice questions, drawing a pedigree, and genetic counselling for a family. To pass the course, you need to achieve a score of 60% for each of these three parts. The multiple choice questions are based mostly on lectures. The pedigree (5 marks) is straightforward but pay attention to special symbols. The genetic counselling is worth 10 marks. You need to provide analysis of what condition the couple has, some information on the condition, the screening procedures (e.g. karyotype analysis, molecular analysis) recommended, and the risk for the offspring inheriting the condition.

NBME

  • There is no NBME for this course; however, some material appears in the biochemistry NBME, which occurs before the end of medical genetics.

There is a lot of material in this course and one final exam at the end. Because there are no tests in between, it is easy to fall behind. Therefore, be vigilant in reviewing your study notes for this course regularly!
